I had meant to post an update here earlier, but forgot. She told me that she has just started working on it and hasn't had as much time to work on it as she would have liked. She also said there would be 2-3 originals that she had written included.

It says she 'plans' on releasing it in Spring 2007. We know she's been working on it, it just remains to be seen when it actually comes out.

From the Billboard interview:

Quote:
Each member will work on individual projects this winter, in between the fall tour and another round of dates beginning in late spring. I want to stay off the road for once and focus on movie scoring, says group member Sean Watkins. I'm really excited about figuring out how to make a living and keep myself in a really creative environment, without having to be gone from home.

Sara Watkins plans on collaborating with other friends and groups, as well as releasing a self-produced solo album within the next six months. Thile is touring with his solo group How To Grow a Band, whose debut album, How To Grow a Woman From the Ground, will be out later this year.

I moved this from the General Discussions area and merged it with another thread about the same topic.

For seriously Sara is planning a solo album? It's about time! I'm so excited! I play violin too and it is just great to hear someone as talented as Sara show her abilities. I love her music, as well as all of NC's music!

I haven't heard any buzz lately about Sara's solo album...anyone have any info? Are we still looking at a release this year or has it been pushed back?

I don't have much info. Has anyone talked to Sara recently, or does anybody know if she's been recording?

As was reported by someone else in another thread, Sara is planning on working with producer John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin fame on this CD. She told me that they are going to go into the studio in Jan or Feb as she has 10 or 11 songs already picked out and needs about 3 or so more upbeat songs. She didn't set a release date at all for this.

There have been a lot of updates for the solo album since this thread was last touched. The album was recently recorded and produced by John Paul Jones (yes, THE John Paul Jones). I'll post Sara's three most recent blogs so you can get a gist:

Here's the oldest: in record time (2-12-08)
Quote:

It's crunch time for Sara, folks. For the next few days I'll be working on all the last minute details of my record. John Paul Jones is producing; we'll cut half of the tracks in Los Angeles and finish in Nashville. It's been nerve-wracking, and at times, brain-frying organizing it up to this point, but I think we're just about there, ha, and in the nick of time. Pre-production starts the 18th.
I flew back home yesterday, after a relaxing weekend in VA, and am super optimistic and ready to work. I'm really happy.
Today I'm up in Valencia, CA where we are mixing a record we made in three sessions totaling eight days this fall and winter.
The band doesn't have a name yet, but the members are Greg Leisz, Benmont Tentch, Pete Thomas, Davey Faragher, Glen Phillips, Luke Bulla, Sean and myself. I know, that's a lot of people, but the mixes are sounding terrific.
Last Thursday's Family Hour had a pretty remarkable cast including Benont and Greg, Gabe, John Paul Jones on mandolin and bass, Jon Brion on electric guitar and legendary Jim Keltner on drums. The latter two came up toward the end of the set. I'd never met Keltner until he sat behind the drums, and I was worthless for a couple minutes Ė trying to figure out what, and how this was happening: That's our rhythm section? John Paul Jones, and Jim Keltner?
We found our common ground in John Hartford, and continued on for a few more. What a night. I still can't believe that band.
Here's the middle blog, mixing (3-17-08)
Quote:
I just want to say a quick hello from the studio.
Helloo . . !
Weíre done with all the tracking for my record now, on to the mixing process. Itís now seeming unmistakably real: Weíre making a record.
Itís strange to be singing every song on it.
I got a little lonesome for the boys halfway though, but the semi-steady flow of friends coming to sing and play and deliver popsicles has helped make the entire experience very happy indeed.
JPJ has been a dream. Dave Sinko (our engineer) a delightful talent and person. Not all the songs on the record are mine, but definitely more than Iím used to. Thatís a new, pretty great feeling.
Off to the airport to pick up my fella now.
Horray!
sara
And last but not least, the most recent, home (3-24-08)
Quote:
Friday night, Dave Sinko, John Paul Jones and I finished mixing my record.
Saturday I flew to Durham, NC to open for Tift Merritt and her band - a home town show celebrating her record release.

Itís a beautiful day back home in Carlsbad. The descent onto Lindburg Field on Easter morning was heavenly. Our flight path came around from south of San Diego, and I saw the inland, south county hills donning the tender, green fuzz of spring growth which will, in a matter of weeks, turn to scorched ground for most of the remainder of the year.

I drove straight to my parents house for Easter brunch with my family.
Today I went to the beach with my best friend and starting catching up on each of our past months, and got my first little sunburn for the year on my back.

This afternoon, I stood in my kitchen and ate a fresh apple and dipped the slices into a container of cottage cheese which I got this morning at Trader Joeís.
Right now, my heart is humming joyously as i sweep, put things away, and listen to music at my house - with fresh air wafting through the screen door.
Iím so happy.
Hereís to spring. To discovering what survived the winter, and new growth!
Love, Sara
