i just noticed something really amazingly detailed, but awesome just the same.
i figured out why, in the scene with the string telephone, the movement speeds up towards Sean. if you listen very very closely, there is a string slide sound that perfectly matches the motion. o only noticed because i am BLASTING the video right now. but its pretty awesome that the Director is that much of an artist of detail.

yes Lolly, what boo boos? i have a few times when i wonder myself if that was intentional, i would like to compare notes. title=Smilie
i am very interested in lasting production of any kind (movies, tv videos, music) because being a Theatre person, any producing that happens around me, or that i do, is fleeting and completely non-reproduceable in the same manner. it never happens the same way twice, and rarely happens the way you pictured it even once. i am sometimes jealous of concrete reproduction and Direction. lasting things, instead of temporal ones.

OK. So this maybe sort of a dumb question.title=Roll
But, I really don't get the song. I get that the imagery in the video matches with the lyrics, like the teacher, the old man, and such, but I just don't get the song. title=thinking title=Confused

Any help is really appreciated.

There is a discussion of the imagry and meaning in the WSTFD thread. But my sense of the consensus is twofold - 1) It's more about their faith that "the only way" is through Jesus and by living as Romans ("When is Rome, do as the Romans do") is a sure way to get off the path.

But, I'm in the camp with some others who 2) feel there is duality in the message. It is captured by the various images and lyrics about the "Specialist, the Teacher, the Native American, the Soldier who dies" where there are strong feelings about these subjects today. And that we are not meant to blindly follow the leader and do as we're told because "When in Rome, doing as the Romans (The Great Empire of the Past) did" is a sure path to ruin. Hence the soldier dying in an Imperial war is staying the path and following orders.

I think they're really searching and growing. title=think

I finally got to see it tonight... WOW. You would not want to have been present for *that* scene of insane hyperventilation.

WIR is the only full song I've heard so far from the new CD, and is driving up the anticipation even higher.

Thanks for thoughts on the song's meaning. It'll probably take some time to sink in for me...

Thanks for the link Sneezy!!! After reading the thread I definitely understand the song better. I never knew what that line meant before, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." Now I completely understand it.

Thanks again. 5 more days!!!!

Got curious about the origin of the quote and found this:

Origins of Sayings - When in Rome, Do As the Romans Do

About the history and origins behind the famous saying when in Rome, do as the Romans do.
Stories behind Famous Sayings

The Saying: WHEN IN ROME, DO AS THE ROMANS DO.

Who Said It: St. Ambrose

When: 387 A.D.

The Story behind It: When St. Augustine arrived in Milan, he observed that the Church did not fast on Saturday as did the Church at Rome. He consulted St. Ambrose, bishop of Milan, who replied: "When I am at Rome, I fast on a Saturday; when I am at Milan, I do not. Follow the custom of the Church where you are." The comment was changed to "When they are at Rome, they do there as they see done" by Robert Burton in his Anatomy of Melancholy. Eventually it became "When in Rome, do as the Romans do."

For those with Macs, or for those in search of a higher quality, non-streaming version of the video...

the iTunes Music Store has it in the music videos section (check for the 8/1/2005 videos).

I can't see the "making of When in Rome" at cmt.com. I went to the link from the "News" on the NC site. Clicked on Making of the video and it tries to work and shows an ad or two, but I never get the video.

Do you have to sign up at cmt.com? I'm wondering why this glitch.

I've seen that happen when the site is busy. Try it again at an hour when there may not be as much demand on the site.

Check out CMT. It might come on during Wide Open Country. And on VH1 it has been coming on during "the Fresh" videos.

I thought it was gonna be like in the movies -- you know, inspirational music, a montage: me sharpening my pencil, me reading, writing, falling asleep on a big pile of books with my glasses all crooked, 'cause in my montage, I have glasses. what do you mean "sean looks different"? to what earlier vision do you compare his current look? anyway, the video is simply amazing. what bugs me, though, is that the last few measures of music, as well as the "in rome" echo, were cut off.

dunno, maybe it's just me being a purist that has this bugging me.

Was this removed from the iTunes store? I don't see it listed... which is annoying, since I finally have an iPod (and it plays video). I'd love to have When in Rome to watch at my discretion!

I got to see the WIR video earlier today and have just viewed it again. My first impression was that the black and white was a bit stark. But, after rethinking the subject matter and viewing it a second time, I did a 180 and now think that it wouldn't have been as good in color. I agree with the many prior comments that the video is awesome to the Nth degree. I wonder how many costume changes Chris had to do after going horizontal on the wet asphalt so much. Odd, though, and I may be wrong, but I don't recall seeing any rain drops on either of the instruments! Sean and Chris both looked great but I am continually amazed at Sara. She always looks great but she seems to have a different appearance everytime I see her. She was absolutely beautiful in the video--even in brogans! BTW, I bought a gift copy of WSTFD through Amazon and it is now winging its way to a friend in Bogota, Columbia. I just think of it as part of my NC missionary work to spread the word abroad to the unenlightened!title=Wink
